More on Walsall

The history of Walsall goes back to the Celtic period, though not much is known about the settlement there uyntil 1002, when it was first documented as Walesho. By the early 13th century it had grown into a small market town and it received a mayor in the 14th century. Due to its position as market town, it became known as "the town with a hundred trades".

The population of Walsall took a quantum leap from the 16th to the 18th century, increasing from 2,000 people to over 86,000 people. It became a center for industries ranging from the making of saddles to the quarrying of limestone.

Slum clearance in the post World War II years saw many 19th century buildings in the town center being demolished. At the same time, suburbanization was taking place with new development sprouting outside the town center. Wallsall continued to modernize into the 21st century. Saddlers Centre, a modern shopping mall, opened in 1980 while an Asda store in 2007.
