More on Congleton

Human habitation in the Congleton area goes back to prehistory. Although artifacts from the Stone Age and Bronze Age were discovered here, there are no traces of settlement from the Roman period. By the time the Viking occupied Britain, it has grown into a market town.

Congleton gained notoriety in the 17th century for the sport of bear-baiting. To draw crowds, the town had to buy a new, more aggressive bear. This it achieved by using the money it had saved to buy a new Bible for the bear, an act remembered down the centuries.
